Labour Party Conference 2026: The Need to Mobilise Connectivity Across Britain

Conversations at Labour Party Conference over the past few days, focused on how to deliver growth across every part of the UK, one theme consistently emerged: modern digital infrastructure is essential to achieving the Government's ambitions.

Against this backdrop, Mobile UK joined TYI and the Local Government Association (LGA) at a fringe event examining how better mobile connectivity can help unlock economic growth, strengthen public services and build more resilient communities. Chaired by Hannah Lazell, Director of Strategy at TYI, the discussion brought together Mobile UK's Chief Executive Hamish MacLeod, Sean Woodcock MP, Jayne Kirkham MP and Claire Douglas, Leader of City of York Council and representative of the LGA.

The discussion reflected a key message at the heart of Mobile UK's Mobilise Britain campaign: world-class mobile infrastructure is a fundamental enabler of economic prosperity. Just as investment in transport, energy and housing is critical to growth, so too is investment in the digital networks that connect people, businesses and public services.

Throughout the session, panellists highlighted the significant opportunity that improved 4G and 5G connectivity presents for the UK economy. Mobile connectivity is increasingly underpinning the way businesses operate, public services are delivered and communities stay connected. As the Government pursues its mission to drive growth in every postcode, ensuring every nation and region can benefit from reliable mobile connectivity must remain a priority.

However, the discussion also recognised the challenges that remain. While headline coverage statistics can paint a positive picture, the real-world experiences of residents, commuters and businesses often tell a different story. Connectivity gaps continue to affect communities across urban and rural areas alike, from commuter rail routes and city centres to coastal and remote communities. In many cases, poor connectivity limits productivity, restricts access to public services and creates barriers to economic opportunity.

The event heard powerful examples of how mobile networks support critical services and community resilience. In rural areas, reliable connectivity is increasingly vital for adult social care provision, while recent extreme weather events have demonstrated the importance of mobile networks as a communications lifeline when other infrastructure fails. As society becomes more digital, resilient mobile connectivity is no longer simply about convenience; it is a necessity.

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the need for policy and regulatory frameworks to keep pace with technological change. Accelerating network deployment, streamlining planning processes and providing greater certainty for investment will all be essential if the UK is to realise the full benefits of advanced mobile infrastructure.

The message from Labour Party Conference was clear: digital infrastructure is no longer a nice-to-have. It is a fundamental building block of economic growth, public service delivery and community resilience.

If the Government is serious about delivering growth across every region of the UK, mobile connectivity must be recognised as a national priority. Through continued investment in 4G and 5G networks, and with the right policy environment in place, the UK can unlock new opportunities for businesses, strengthen communities and ensure everyone benefits from a more connected future.

That is why Mobile UK will continue to champion the practical reforms needed to help Mobilise Britain and deliver growth to every postcode.
