Mobile Connectivity Is Vital To The Future of the Country - Mobile UK Annual Reception

At Mobile UK’s annual parliamentary reception last night, DSIT Minister Sir Chris Bryant MP powerfully affirmed mobile connectivity as vital to the future of the country, likening it to essential utilities such as water, gas, and electricity.

The Minister's speech underscored the government’s vision for a digitally empowered country, emphasising that "If we want a digital government that drives productivity across both the public and private sectors, it is only possible through robust connectivity.”

Kindly sponsored by Joe Morris MP, the reception brought together parliamentarians, industry leaders, and key stakeholders to celebrate mobile connectivity's transformative role in driving economic growth and innovation.

Sir Chris highlighted key government initiatives including the 10-Year UK Infrastructure Strategy, an updated Ofcom coverage checker, and the critical role of MPs as a bridge between the public and industry to ensure connectivity reaches where it’s needed most. He also stressed the importance of focusing the Shared Rural Network on areas where people live and work, while also indicated he was proud to have secured its funding.

Sir Chris also spoke of the government’s ambition to work with the industry to achieve standalone 5G across the whole of the UK and its potential to transform public services.

Mobile UK’s Chief Executive, Hamish MacLeod, reflected on the immense scale of the UK’s connectivity journey, acknowledging collaborative efforts and the Minister’s leadership in embedding connectivity into the UK’s infrastructure and industrial strategies. He stressed the urgent need to fully implement the final elements of the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) Act and to push forward with essential planning reforms, affirming the mobile industry’s commitment to working closely with DSIT to drive forward the next phase of growth.

The evening was a powerful reminder of the collective ambition and collaboration required to build a truly connected Britain. Mobile UK extends its sincere thanks to all who attended and contributed to the evening’s success. Together, we are building the foundations for a more connected, innovative, and prosperous United Kingdom.
