Data Communications Company Podcast: Advancing Britain's Smart Meter Network

In the latest episode of our Live Better Connected podcast series, we’re exploring smart energy and how data connectivity supports Britain’s energy operations. Our Director of Communications and Policy, Gareth Elliott, is joined by Penny Brown, Chief Operating Officer, and Stève Hervouet, Chief Strategy and Regulation Officer, from the Data Communications Company (DCC).

What makes the DCC vital to Britain’s Energy Infrastructure?

Founded in 2013, the DCC is the backbone of Britain’s smart energy future. It’s responsible for building and operating the digital infrastructure that supports the nationwide rollout of smart meters. The DCC have created a robust, intelligent network that connects homes and businesses across the country. Throughout our podcast episode, Penny and Stève unpack how the DCC has transformed the way energy is managed, paving the way for a smarter and more sustainable future.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are compact, small displays that display real time energy usage, directly showing consumers, how much energy is being used at home, so smarter decisions can be made. District network operators rely on smart meters to balance energy loads, ensuring the grid can meet demand efficiently. As Penny and Stève explain, smart meters are a critical tool for monitoring and tracking data.

Future-proofing the network

Currently, the DCC are building a new network to keep up with the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). The DCC is preparing for a staggering 7 billion devices on the network by 2027, up from 3 billion today. The DCC are also preparing to move to 4G, which will allow their network to enter 30 million homes. Smart meters only operate by using 25 gigabytes of data a month.

What opportunities do smart meter networks provide?

Steve highlights the transformative opportunities that smart meter networks offer. Beyond giving consumers greater control over their energy use, these networks enable participation in initiatives like the Demand Flexibility Scheme (DFS). This innovative program rewards consumers for using energy during off-peak times, helping to reduce strain on the grid while cutting costs for households.
