Connected North 2025: Championing Digital Progress in the North

Last week, Mobile UK participated in Connected North 2025, a major gathering of policymakers, tech leaders, local authorities, and connectivity providers to shape the digital future of the North.

Held in Manchester, the event brought together over 2,500 attendees and 200 expert speakers to spotlight the infrastructure, policy, and collaboration needed to bridge the digital divide and unlock regional growth.

As part of the conference, both Hamish MacLeod, Chief Executive of Mobile UK, and Gareth Elliott, our Director of Policy and Communications, contributed to important panel discussions on connectivity, digital equity, and the future of mobile infrastructure.

Strengthening the backbone: Wireless infrastructure’s role in the North’s economy

Gareth joined fellow industry leaders on a panel that explored how wireless infrastructure can underpin the North’s economic ambitions.

Key points from the discussion included:

  • A clear need for central Government to prioritise mobile connectivity, with more resources directed towards supporting local authorities.
  • Recognition of the proactive efforts of local authorities—particularly the strong leadership and innovation from digital champions in Manchester and Liverpool.
  • A call for greater consistency and capability across all councils, not just those with the capacity to bid for and manage funding streams to drive forward digital transformation.

The session reinforced that wireless infrastructure is not just a tech issue; it’s an enabler of jobs, innovation, and inclusive economic growth across the North.

Navigating the digital switchover: Ensuring no one is left behind

Hamish joined a powerful panel discussion on the UK’s transition away from legacy networks—specifically the PSTN, 2G, and 3G switch-offs.

The panel addressed:

  • The importance of supporting vulnerable users and essential services through the transition.
  • Ensuring that emergency systems and telecare services are not disrupted.
  • The need for clear communication, robust planning, and collaboration between industry, government, and third-sector partners to ensure a smooth, inclusive switchover.

As the UK continues to upgrade its networks, these discussions highlighted the responsibility to ensure no one is excluded from progress.

Building a digitally inclusive North

Connected North 2025 reinforced the vital role of digital connectivity in shaping a prosperous, inclusive future for the region. From economic opportunity to social equity, mobile and wireless technologies are central to this transformation.

It’s clear that a united approach is essential to unlock the full potential of digital infrastructure for everyone, everywhere.
