Accelerating the UK’s Mobile Infrastructure: Insights from Our Parliamentary Dinner with the Industry Parliament Trust

Mobile UK recently had the pleasure of attending an insightful parliamentary dinner, hosted by the Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT), to discuss a critical question for the nation's future: How do we accelerate the UK's wireless infrastructure rollout?

The evening was expertly chaired by Lord Kulveer Ranger, and featured opening speeches from Virgin Media O2 and the Chair of the Mobile Infrastructure Forum. A dynamic cross-party group of parliamentarians joined industry leaders to share their perspectives.

1. The Urgent Need to Close the Connectivity Gap

While the UK has made significant strides in deployment, the discussion opened with a stark reality check regarding what it takes to transform the UK into a top-tier digital economy. Critical connectivity shortfalls still exist, and it was noted that London currently trails many of its global peers in international digital league tables—a trend that must be reversed if the UK is to remain globally competitive.

2. Unlocking Industry Investment

The mobile sector is currently undertaking immense deployment efforts, but a growing friction point was highlighted. Just as the demand for AI and data-driven technologies sends network traffic soaring, outdated regulatory barriers are holding back vital innovation. To unlock the next wave of industry investment, the consensus was that macroeconomic and regulatory frameworks must evolve to better support the sector.

3. Modernising the Planning System

One of the most resonant points of the evening was the revelation that operators are currently "running to stand still." Digital infrastructure is frequently being lost due to site evictions and Notices to Quit (NTQs), meaning enormous effort is spent just maintaining current coverage rather than expanding it.

To fix this, attendees discussed the urgent need for a forward-thinking planning framework that:

  • Permits more resilient, future-proof, multi-antenna masts.
  • Formally embeds the socioeconomic value of connectivity into local authority decision-making.

The Collective Call to Action

The overarching consensus in the room was clear: digital connectivity is not a luxury; it is the backbone of modern British business and society. There was a shared determination among the attending parliamentarians and industry figures to champion these issues moving forward.

To turn these insights into action, the momentum cannot stall. We need urgent, decisive progress on both the Mobile Market Review and comprehensive Planning Reform.

Our thanks to the IPT for hosting such a collaborative, timely, and vital evening.
